First signs of snow for south-east Australia. by Steph Ball

Despite being 19 days away from the start of the official Australian winter ski season, parts of the south-east have already been seeing the first signs of snow. The Victorian ski resorts of Mount Buller and Mount Hotham experienced a steady flurry of snow on Monday morning; predicted to be the precursor to heavier snowfall.

A cold front is expected to move through the region on Tuesday night bringing heavier snow, gale force winds and a temperature drop to many resorts. Residents of Victoria have been experiencing a warm autumn, with last week’s rain marking the end of Melbourne’s driest 12 months on record. It appears that a change is on the way over the next couple of days with Weather Bureau forecaster Scott Williams stating “I think we’ll see temperatures down around minus four to minus five up on the peaks by tomorrow morning through the early hours.”

With a disappointing ski season last year, locals are now hoping that these early snow flurries will mark the start of a strong ski season. One Mount Hotham resident says “because we didn’t get the snow last year, it’s almost like a sigh of relief that they are predicting a bit more than average for this time of year.”
