USA Plains ravaged by violent storms by Darren Bett

Severe storms and tornadoes have raged through parts of the mid west USA injuring several and leaving a trail of destruction.

A line of powerful thunderstorms began developing on Friday stretching from Texas through Kansas and up into parts of Nebraska. Several people were injured in western Nebraska late on Friday, as a tornado ripped up farms and power lines, spreading debris along a half-mile wide path.

Thunderstorms continued rippling across the plains, and in the Texas Panhandle, more than 14,000 homes and businesses lost power late on Saturday after violent storms and tornadoes battered rural areas.

These major storms are developing along a boundary zone, as warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico collides with cooler drier air from the north. They are forecast to trek along the breadth of the nation during the upcoming week.

Parts of Kansas and Texas are expecting torrential rain, strong gusty winds and large hail, which could potentially damage wheat crops. Wheat crops across the plains are down after damage to the plants occurred during the Easter weekend freeze. Severe weather over the next few days is likely to add to problems.
