Snow for UK, Europe and the USA by Isobel Lang
Rather than simply admire the Photos of the Week section on our website, wouldn’t you prefer to pull on your wellies and stomp in some fresh snow yourself?
Snow is on the way for some parts of the United Kingdom. A bitter northerly wind is set to bring snow to eastern and southeastern areas of Scotland and England during the next couple of days. Sunday night and Monday is of concern, as snow and ice may cause disruption in parts of the southeast, particularly eastern coastal counties. Also, with the chance of even a light covering of snow in London, there is the potential for some travel disruption. We will keep you updated.
Severe winter weather has left three dead in Austria. Freezing rain, where rain freezes on contact with frozen ground, meant that driving conditions were treacherous. Strong winds were an added hazard.
Staying with Austria, and a World Cup Super-G ski race was postponed until Monday due to difficult conditions from rain, snow and high winds. Another low pressure system is set to bring further snow and strong winds over the weekend, and then clearer weather is forecast for the start of the week.
Finally, to the United States, where this weekend, a significant winter storm is expected. Low pressure is developing and is set to move east from the Midwest to the Appalachians. Snow accumulations are expected to range from 6 to 12 inches, up to 30cms, across parts of the Midwest, the mid-Atlantic and southern New England. It will be very cold too with a noticeable wind chill. Sunday should see a slow improvement as the snow eases off.
