Counting the cost of Gamma by Philip Avery

Yesterday morning Tropical Storm Gamma thankfully changed its track dramatically to spare those Central American countries which have already fallen victim to devastating storms through this year’s Atlantic hurricane season.

Gamma has lost more strength as it unpinned itself from the Honduras coast last night. It was downgraded to a tropical depression with sustained winds at present around 30mph, well below the threshold for a tropical storm.

As Gamma drifts off into the Caribbean Sea and continues to weaken, Honduras is counting the costs of the destruction.

The government of Honduras said that over 250 homes have been destroyed forcing over 11,000 people to evacuate. Floods from the heavy rains that lashed the country washed away bridges and roads as well as completely destroying six government buildings.

If another storm forms in the coming weeks it will be named using the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, Delta.
