It was the first full day of spring but you would not have guessed it by the weather. A cold northerly flow brought in snow showers to parts of Northern Scotland and Northern England with even a brief covering in places. The high for the day at Lerwick (Shetland) only climbed to 0C (32F) with snow showers on and off all day. It was even colder than that at Aboyne this morning all the way down to -4C (25F). This was the coldest place across the UK.
The cold air from the north also fed in a lot across cloud across the UK. The cloud was quite stubborn across the southern UK but further north there were a few sunny spells. The sunniest place was Aberdeen (Aberdeenshire) with 8.1 hours. The sunshine still did not help warm up the temperatures across northern Britain where daytime highs were well below normal between 2-5C (36-41F). Normal march highs are between 8-10C (46-50F). The warmest place for the day was Saunton Sands (Devon) at 9C (48F).
For most of the UK it was a dry day with the exception of the wintry showers feeding into the northeast coast of Britain. These did not provide a tremendous amount of rain or snow in places. Kirkwall (Orkney) was the wettest place with 2.2 mm.
