Snow Rescue in California by Peter Gibbs
A father and his three children, who were trapped in the northern Californian Mountains for three days during heavy snow, have been rescued. The family went missing earlier this week as they went to the mountain range for a Christmas tree. The four left for the tree hunt on Sunday but were not reported missing until late Monday. By then a fierce storm had dumped more than a foot of snow in the mountains and temperatures had dropped into the low twenties Fahrenheit (minus 5 to minus 6 degrees Celsius).
Searchers set out on foot and snow mobiles but their rescue efforts were often hampered by both rain and heavy snow. They had to wait on breaks in the weather to continue their searching. The family were eventually airlifted out of the mountains on Wednesday, just as another storm was bearing down. Family and friends were starting to lose hope as this new storm began dumping yet more snow in the region, about 100 miles north of Sacramento.
The National Weather Service in Nevada, say the weather is part of a series of storms that is expected to bring rain and snow to California into the New Year. Meteorologists say ‘it could be a good White Christmas. It is just one storm after another.’
