Tropical storm forming in the Gulf of Mexico by Jay Wynne

Earlier this week, typhoons Nari and Wipha caused havoc as they made landfall in southeast Asia - all eyes are now turned to Florida in the USA.

It’s very likely that a tropical storm could form during the next day or so as a tropical disturbance moves west across Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico. Thunderstorms which are spreading west over the peninsula today will bring some very much needed rain to the drought-stricken state. These same storms could potentially organise when they hit the warm gulf waters and wind up into a tropical storm, and then into another hurricane. Further updates will appear here.

Meanwhile on the pacific coast of Mexico, tropical storm Ivo strengthened into a hurricane as it headed towards the Baja peninsula. Ivo is currently around 500 miles (800 km) south of the peninsula with maximum sustained wind speeds of 75 mph (120 km/h). The US National Hurricane Center’s forecast models showed the storm due to make landfall early next week.

Earlier this week, typhoon Wipha slammed into the east coast of China and was expected to bring total chaos, however, the damage and casualties were far less than originally feared and the typhoon has weakened considerably with just heavy rain remaining to west of Shanghai.
