Summer storms bring renewed flooding across the UK by Steph Ball
A rash of intense summer storms moved north out of France and across the south of the UK on Tuesday evening and night, bringing torrential downpours and flash flooding.
There were many reports of intense displays of lightning, while in some parts; emergency services were left inundated by the calls for help from the public, as flood waters rose rapidly.
Across Kent, perhaps the worst affected area, the deluge left many roads and homes flooded and thousands of residents without power. Manston, Kent saw the highest rainfall during Tuesday evening with almost 50mm recorded ( 2 inches ), with much of this falling within a short space of time. This was akin to all of the average June rainfall falling in the matter of a few hours!
In Shropshire residents were continuing to mop up this morning after flooding hit the area for the second time in a week. Two villages were left cut off after a road was reportedly washed away. Parts of Hereford and Worcester were also badly affected.
Race-goers at the first day of Royal Ascot were lucky to escape mostly dry, with the showers not arriving until late in the day. However the forecast is less favourable for the next few days with the weather set to stay unsettled and showery.
This will come as unwelcome news too for the many heading southwest this week for the start of the Glastonbury Festival.
