Storms hit South Africa by Matt Taylor

Cold, wet and windy conditions have swept across many parts of South Africa over the past few days. For the rest of today and into the start of the new week, further severe weather has been forecast.

The very cold, windy weather and heavy rain to hit Cape Town last night was brought on by a cold front that has moved up from the Antarctic. The cold blast is set to spread to Western and Eastern Cape provinces as well as parts of Northern Cape, southern Free State and Lesotho.

The South African weather service has issued six warnings across the country. Snow has been forecast for the mountains of the western and Northern Cape, while gale force winds are expected to strengthen to 35 knots (65km/h) from a southwesterly direction.

With the most intense stage of the unseasonable winter storm affecting the country until next Tuesday, many farmers have been advised to keep their animals indoors.

The cold snap is forecast to penetrate even further inland, and by tomorrow is expected to spread to Limpopo in the far north of the country, and into southern Mozambique.
