India & Pakistan struck by intense heatwave by Sean Batty

Little rain and few cloudy days have allowed the mercury to soar in many parts of India and Pakistan over the past few weeks, bringing some devastating consequences.

In India over the last 10 days a massive 128 people have died from the sweltering heat which has swept the country.

Temperatures in the coastal Andhra Pradesh state have risen to an average of 45C (113F) during the first part of May, even touching an incredible 49.8C (122F) in some places.

Over the last few weeks in Pakistan temperatures have been around 7-10C above the May average in some northern areas, such as Southern Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. The mercury hit a scorching high of 43C (109F) on Thursday in the Punjab capital.

Temperatures through the next few days are expected to continue reaching the low 40s in Celsius in many areas, including in Badin, Chhor and Jocobabad.

In both Pakistan and India severe heat conditions is common around this time, as the heat intensifies before the June-September monsoon rains arrive.
