Gusty winds sweep across the northeastern USA by John Hammond

Northeastern parts of the USA have been seeing some very unsettled weather in the past 24 hours. A deep area of low pressure swept its way eastwards, bringing a short and intense spell of rain, accompanied by some very strong and gusty winds.

Winds gusting up to 85mph tore down power lines, resulting in 440,000 homes and businesses without electricity across six states, including Connecticut, New Jersey and Maine. Some homes had their power supplies restored in hours, but others will have to wait days where utility poles have been blown over.

New York City also experienced the windy conditions, with vehicles blown over on some of the bridges linking the city to surrounding states. Other forms of transport were also severely disrupted when a tree fell on a train track north of the city, and flights leaving Newark International and La Guardia airports were delayed by up to two hours.

Conditions are set to remain wet and windy across northeastern parts of the USA in the next day or so, but it will settle down later on in the weekend, as high pressure starts to build. This will bring dry and sunny weather by day, but cold and frosty conditions by night.
