First snowfall of season for Northeastern USA by Susan Powell
It’s been turning rather wintry in the north east of the USA in the past few days, with upstate New York being blanketed with their first snowfall of the season.
As low pressure moved eastwards, deep cold polar air dug in behind, bringing heavy snowfall, combined with bitter northerly winds. Some of the snow was due to the ‘lake effect’, whereby cold air travels across the warm lakes, picking up moisture. This moisture then forms clouds, which deposit snowfall as they are blown over land.
Eastern and southern parts of upstate New York were worst affected, with some places seeing as much as 33cm – more than a foot – of lying snow.
The snowfall brought some disruption, with dozens of schools closed and widespread commuter chaos on the roads. Less cold weather is likely for the next few days, with mainly dry and sunny conditions expected.
