The trouble with snow

Kyrgyzstan lies between Kazakhstan and NW China. It is a mountainous state in Central Asia, that has seen problems resulting from recent snowfall and heavy rains. The Bishkek-Osh Highway, the main road linking the north and south of the republic, was hit by an avalanche, which engulfed 10 cars and killed 4 people.
Elsewhere, many people were evacuated from their homes due to flooding in the northwest of Kyrgyzstan.

The Elbrus region sits in the far south of Russia, just over the border from Georgia. The slopes here have also been hit by avalanches, with several snowboarders missing. Although the rescuers do have a few clear weather days, more snow is forecast at the weekend.

Georgia, itself, has had problems with heavy snow. 200 vehicles were trapped on the Georgian Military Highway in the east of the state. Snow ploughs trying to clear the snow at the start of the week had difficulties due to strong winds and the risk of avalanches.

Most of the Scottish resorts have a low Avalanche hazard this week but there are some concerns for the northern Cairngorms. After fresh snow and moderate NE winds the shear potential, in some spots, between the hard snow and ice layers is being watched.

After mid week sunshine, for the southern Alps, there is a lot more snow on the way. So hopefully good news for the skiers and boarders.

However, beware if you are off to Italy. The 'Speed Police' are on the slopes. Over 200 special ski police will be out watching. People must leave a safe distance behind the person in front, give priority to those joining the piste from the right and skiers must slow down in poor visibility. Just like being on the motorway.
