Just in case you’re struggling to enter into the spirit of Christmas, perhaps this weekend’s cold snap and threat of snow showers across Wales and the Midlands may help! Temperatures are likely to fall below freezing overnight with a blast of cold northerlies, but that’s nothing in comparison to what’s happening in the north Canadian city of Eureka at the moment.

The maximum temperature on Wednesday measured only minus 43.2 Celsius, twelve degrees below normal for December. However temperatures today will improve, hovering at freezing throughout the afternoon but there is a chance of some light snow and rain.

Staying with the cold theme, many parts of Russia have been experiencing a Siberian blast. Residents in cities like Khatanga say overnight temperatures plummeted to minus 48.4 Celsius overnight on Wednesday into Thursday morning! Yes, you would expect it to be cold here at this time of year but this is a little excessive - twelve degrees below the monthly average!

Florida too has experienced a cold snap, although no where near as extreme, but I would imagine this was a shock to the system for the local residents.

The normally warm resort of Key West suffered a blast of colder air, with maximum temperatures for them on Wednesday six degrees below average, only reaching a paltry high of 18.3 degrees, 65F. I bet the poor dears had to put on a jumper….aahhh!
