Snow in midwest heralds an Arctic chill by Alex Deakin
A winter storm has been moving across the midwest of the USA in the last 24 hours, bringing heavy snow and strong winds, combining to give blizzard conditions across Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming.
While mountainous areas are appreciating the snowfall to top up the ski resorts, lower lying towns and cities were paralysed by the snow, which caused widespread disruption to travel.
The commute to work for the residents of Denver was a slow and icy one, with temperatures struggling to get much above -5°C (23°F) on Thursday, accompanied by gusty winds which made it feel much colder.
Up to 20 inches of snow (50cm) fell in parts of Wyoming, and neighbouring Nebraska saw more than 12 inches in places.
The winter storm that brought this snowy weather has opened the gates to some very cold arctic air that will sweep across many parts of the northern USA in the next few days.
After last weekend’s winter storm temperatures have recovered in New York City, however, they are set to plummet again at the weekend. Temperatures will be no higher than 2°C by day, and dropping well below freezing at night.
