Heavy snow in Colorado by Sean Batty

Heavy snow has been falling in various parts of Colorado, where a winter storm has spread a white blanket of snow over roads and ski resorts. The national Weather Service expects 5 to 10 inches (12 to 25 cms) of fresh snow across El Paso County and so far the heaviest official snow reading is 14.3 inches (36 cms) in Idaho Springs.

A storm that has pounded western Wyoming brought two feet (61 cms) of dense, new snow with 2.5 inches of water (63.5 mm) to the mountains.

Avalanche forecasters warn of increasing danger from snow slides and the general avalanche hazard is forecast to be high.

A deep storm is currently pounding the northwest Pacific coast and will bring more snow to the Rockies in the coming days.

Meanwhile it’s snowing like crazy in Colorado, but several members of the World Cup ski family are focused on global warning and its effect on their sport. The World Cup ski circuit has already been affected by lack of snow this season, with several races having been called off.

Many regions in the Alps had the warmest November on record, delaying the arrival of snow. On Thursday, Oslo in Norway had a maximum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius (46F), when the average maximum temperature for December is Minus 2 degrees Celsius (28F).
