Winter tightens its grasp in the US. by Elizabeth Saary

South-eastern parts of the US are bracing themselves for severe winter weather today, as the cold artic blast which has battered north-eastern parts, looks set to head further south.

Over the past week, cold northerly winds have sent temperatures tumbling and brought heavy snowstorms to the north-eastern US states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, causing havoc for transport networks.

Now, sleet, snow and even freezing rain are expected to spread as far south as South Carolina. Forecasters are warning of thick ice across roads and pavements.

The cold snap is likely to persist well into next week, and comes just as NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) announce that 2005 was one of the warmest years since records began.

Back home, the UK is also bracing for a cold snap. Northerly winds are set to bring cold arctic air to most of the UK on Friday, bringing with it some wintry showers for Scotland and northern England. The cold air will reach all parts of the UK by Saturday, before milder air edges back into the western parts on Sunday.
