Snow once again is the major weather story in the US with storms affecting both sides of the continent.
For the north-eastern States it was a case of déjà vu this weekend. Just one week after a storm brought over a metre of snow to parts New Hampshire and over half a metre to Boston, another weather system has delivered a blanket of white to the northeast.
In New York 15cm of lying snow transformed the streets into a shopper's winter wonderland. Ski resorts are enjoying all the fresh snow with more forecast today. Smuggler's Notch in Vermont is predicting as much as 66cm to have fallen by the end of the day.
Snow turned to rain in Cincinnati leaving a slushy mess which caused several accidents on a number of the state's busiest routes. There was also flooding in the Lincoln Park area of New Jersey as rain fell upon snow that was still leftover from last week.
Some parts of the north-east also had outbreaks of extremely dangerous freezing rain. This is a type of rain that falls through a layer of cold surface air, but remains liquid despite having a temperature below zero. Upon contact with cold surfaces it freezes into a layer of ice which not only causes traffic chaos but also makes pavement hazardous to walk on.
Another area of low pressure is forecast to move into the northeast by midweek bringing yet more rain, sleet and snow.
On the other side of the continent weekend snow has triggered avalanches in the northwest. A group of nine people were snowshoeing along the Snow Lake trail at the Snoqualmie pass, 50 miles east of Seattle in Washington State, when an avalanche struck. One member of the group is still reported missing.
