Storms sweep across southeastern states of the USA by Darren Bett

Powerful storms have been sweeping across southeastern parts of the USA in the past 24 hours, bringing widespread damage to the states of Alabama, South Carolina and Florida in particular.

Very strong winds across Florida tore a roof off a school building, leaving 13 school children injured. The rain that accompanied the wind caused other problems in the way of flooding, with some damage to properties.

South Carolina saw even more damage as the active storms produced tornadoes across the state. One particular tornado ripped through a trailer park completely destroying nine mobile homes, with many injured.

Neighbouring North Carolina was also struck by a tornado, which affected the town of Gastonia, damaging eighteen homes. The state fire service described how windows had been blown out and walls separated under the force of the twister.

The weather should temporarily improve for the next day or so, as high pressure builds, bringing dry and fine conditions. However, another active weather system will push eastwards on Tuesday, bringing the threat of more powerful storms to southeastern states.
