Heavy Rain Across Europe by Helen McKenzie

Much of Europe has been experiencing some heavy rain over the last few days. Low pressure has been dominating over much of the continent, bringing bands of thunderstorms across many countries, from Romania and Bulgaria in the east, to the UK in the west.

Split, in Croatia, saw 48mm (1.89 inches) of rain fall in just 12 hours on Sunday, which is more than its monthly average for August, at 43mm (1.69 inches). Herceg Novi in Montenegro had 60mm (2.36 inches) in the same 12 hour period and 32mm (1.26 inches) fell on Pescara in Italy, which is well over half the monthly average.

Parts of the UK had their fair share of the wet weather too. Eastern fringes saw the worst of the rain, with heavy and persistent showers over the last two days. Lowestoft in Suffolk had 35.9mm (1.41 inches) of rain in 24 hours, which is almost the monthly average for August, at 37.1mm (1.46 inches).

The outlook for the coming week is for conditions to remain unsettled across much of Europe, with further showers likely. Thunderstorms are forecast to spread northwards across western parts of Europe and into the UK on Thursday and Friday.
