Nor'easter brings record snowfall to New York City by Penny Tranter
The most significant winter storm so far this season has clobbered northeastern states of the USA, with record-breaking amounts of snow falling in places.
A developing area of low pressure gathered moisture from the Atlantic Ocean, and mixed with cold polar air from Canada, provided the wintry cocktail of snow and blizzard conditions.
New York bore the brunt of the winter storm, with heavy snow and strong winds, giving a record-breaking 27 inches (68cm) of snow in Central Park. This beat the previous snowfall record of 26.4 inches, set in December 1947.
With such a large amount of snow falling, it is no surprise that all of the major airports in New York City were closed, with hundreds of flights cancelled.
Washington DC and Baltimore saw almost 200,000 homes without power due to power lines collapsing under the weight of the snow.
Temperatures will hover around freezing for the start of the week, but much milder weather will bring a rapid thaw of the snow from midweek onwards.
