More heavy rain for the UK this week. by Steph Ball
While heavy rain is expected today across parts of the north and west, the Met Office has this morning issued an early warning for further heavy rain through Wednesday to Friday this week.
Highest risk areas are those which could very well do without anymore rain, with 75 to 100mm forecast over parts of Western Scotland, Cumbria and North Wales
Many parts of the UK experienced a wet end to last weekend with parts of Scotland, Cumbria and North Wales in particular seeing some torrential rain and flooding, as well as gale force winds
At the time of writing, 10 flood warnings remain in force across the UK. 9 of the flood warnings are for England, covering catchment areas for the rivers Severn, Wye and Ouse, while the remaining warning covers parts of the Lower Dee Valley.
In the 24hrs running up to Monday morning, there was some very high rainfall totals recorded. The Lake District totted up 180mm of rainfall (7 inches) with up to 127mm across Capel Curig in North Wales (5 inches ). Capel Curig has seen 344mm so far this month (13.5inches) which is already above the monthly December average of 298mm ( 11.7inches).
A stretch of the A470 in Gwynedd had to be closed Sunday night after the heavy rain caused a landslide, while part of the Conwy Valley train line remained closed. In parts of South Wales, the rain led to traffic diversions with some homes suffering flood damage.
The recent heavy rain also saw the River Severn reach a peak of 14.7ft (4.5m) in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, while in Bewdley, Worcestershire, the main bridge in the town had to be closed after it flooded as the river reached 15ft (4.6m ) above its normal level.
