Summer temperature contrasts divide Australia. by Victoria Good

After recent reports of sweltering temperatures for eastern parts of Australia, it has been reported today that western parts of the country have started the summer on a rather cool note.

The Australian Weather Bureau stated today that this year’s start to the summer in Perth has been the coolest for 40 years.

Temperatures so far this summer have been well below the December average of 29 Celsius (84 Fahrenheit), and the forecast temperature for today doesn’t hold much hope for a heat wave either. The mercury is expected to peak at just 20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) today.

A forecaster at the Bureau said the cool conditions have not been seen in Perth at this time of year since 1965.

The same thing can not be said for the eastern side of the country. Last week Sydney reached 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), very much above the December average of 25 Celsius. Many people have been reported to be suffering from heat stroke and heat exhaustion over the past week.

There isn’t any respite in sight here either as the heat looks set to continue in New South Wales over the next few days, with temperatures still well above average.
