Winter storm blankets northern states of the US with several inches of snow by Kaye Forster

A winter storm has swept across many states of the US over the past few days, giving large accumulations of snow to many areas. The storm developed across the northern states of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin on Friday and slowly moved eastwards through the weekend. The storm was not just packed with heavy snow, it also brought strong, gusty winds and there were also reports of thunder and lightning.

The worst hit towns were Albert Lea, Mantorville and Rochester in Minnesota. Over 300mm (12 inches) of snow were reported here and drivers were discouraged from taking to the roads. Many schools in the area were closed on Friday.

Parts of Iowa and Wisconsin also received a good covering of snow. Northern parts of Iowa reported around 230mm (9 inches) of snow, while Wisconsin measured around 150mm (6 inches).

The storm is continuing to move slowly eastwards and it is still expected to bring heavy rain for many eastern states such us Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey over the next 24 hours.
