More violent weather for Australia by Darren Bett

After wet and very windy weather struck South Australia and New South Wales at the weekend, parts of the Gold Coast have now seen violent storms.

Car windows were smashed and property damaged by “missile-like” hailstones from a severe thunderstorm that swept through several Gold Coast towns on Wednesday afternoon. Traffic was brought to a standstill on the Pacific Highway after an eleven-car pile-up caused by the hailstorm, and strong winds brought down trees.

The storm has now moved off the coast and weather warnings have been cancelled. Bureau of Meteorology forecasters say more thunderstorms could develop however, though they are unlikely to be as severe.

Far north of Australasia, in the northeast Pacific Ocean, the season’s latest typhoon is about 500 miles (800 km) southeast of the Japanese Ryuku Islands. Typhoon Kirogi (meaning ‘wild goose’ in Korean) currently has winds in excess of 120 mph (190 km/h) and is moving very slowly southwestward.

Kirogi is expected to turn round to travel northwards on Thursday and then steer to the northeast and travel parallel to Japan’s main islands. If Kirogi does continue on this path then it will be no threat to land.

Back in the UK, London narrowly missed breaking a night-time temperature record. The minimum temperature recorded at London Weather Centre was 18.2°C (64.8°F) on Tuesday night, which was just shy of the previous record of 18.3°C (64.9°F). This is about three degrees warmer than the average daytime maximum temperature in the capital in October.
