Tropical Storm hits China by Rob McElwee

A fading Tropical Storm Pabuk brought chaos to the south coast of China on Friday afternoon killing one person in Hong Kong and injuring scores of others.

Pabuk, the seventh tropical storm to visit China this year, made landfall at around 4pm yesterday, lashing not only Hong Kong, but also parts of Guangdong and Guangxi with torrential rain.

The same tropical storm crossed the strait between Taiwan and the Philippines last week producing heavy rain that triggered landslides which killed 11 people in the Philippines and severely disrupted power supplies across southern Taiwan.

Pabuk was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression that lashed China’s coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian with heavy rain late on Wednesday. Pabuk then gained force and returned to tropical storm status as it headed southwest.

Despite bringing bedlam to parts of Hong Kong, the tropical storm brought some very much needed rain to parts southern China, offering temporary relief to the lingering drought that has been plaguing the regions for many months now.
