Fresh snow blankets northern China by Penny Tranter

Fresh snow has blanketed northeast China’s Heilongjiang province and many parts of neighbouring Liaoning and Jilin provinces, which are recovering from a major snowstorm last weekend.

A current of cold air from Siberia has brought snow to these northern and eastern regions of China. Heavy snow hit the Heilongjiang provincial capital of Harbin on Friday, forcing the closure of Harbin Taiping International Airport.

The Harbin-Daqing Highway, with a visibility of less than 10 meters, was closed because of heavy snow, according to local traffic authorities. Motorists in northeast China were warned to expect further disruption with more heavy snow forecast over the coming weekend.

Last weekend a low pressure system moved across northern China bringing the area’s heaviest snow storm in almost 60 years, according to the Shenyang Meteorological Station. The combination of heavy snow and high winds knocked down power lines, leaving thousands of homes without power or heat in subfreezing weather.

One person was killed and seven injured when the roof of a produce market collapsed under the weight of snow.

The current area of snow will move south allowing sunny skies, light winds and higher temperatures to follow into northern China over the next few days.
