Nor’easter set to bring snow from Alabama to Maine by Jo Farrow

A deepening low pressure system is forecast to track northeastwards across eastern USA through Saturday and Sunday, bringing winter weather from its current position over southern Alabama all the way up to New England.

Snow or winter weather advisories are in force for nearly twenty states, including New Jersey and New York. Long Island is forecast to receive up to a foot of snowfall, in what will be the first major snowstorm of the winter. Winter has been kind to the authorities responsible for clearing snow from roads. Less than 5 inches fell on Long Island on 15th January, and a similar amount at the beginning of winter on 6th December, but milder air and rain did a lot of the work usually left to the snowploughs. Much of the US had a milder-than-average January.

Coastal areas of New England, including the city of Boston, will be watching out for flooding, as the arrival of the nor’easter coincides with high tides. The Boston area is expecting up to 15 inches of snow, with strong winds making the snow drift.

Once the winter storm clears away, calmer weather is set to return across eastern USA for a few days, as high pressure builds.
