Parts of Scotland still on flood alert by Kirsty McCabe
After over a day of persistent rainfall, residents in some parts of Scotland are today bracing themselves for further rainfall through Friday. Roads remain closed and properties are flooded in Dumfries and Galloway, with the village of Dundrennan being worst hit. The village was deluged with 52mm (2.05 inches) of rain in 12 hours; half of the expected monthly rainfall.
The cause of the continued rainfall is an area of low pressure from the Atlantic that has been sitting over Scotland for the past couple of days. Due to the slow moving nature of the fronts, the rain persisted for a number of hours leading to flooding.
On Friday morning, there are still a number of warnings for heavy rain in effect in Scotland, across Strathclyde, Fife, and southwest Scotland for heavy rain. Further rain is expected across much of Scotland throughout Friday, with a number of rivers in Ayrshire being placed on flood watch.
