UK fairs better than Spain this Easter by Sean Batty
As thousands of Britons packed their sun cream and sunglasses for a holiday break in Spain they would have been sorely disappointed. As the airplane touched down on the runway they would have realised that a brolly would have come in handier.
High pressure (associated with settled weather) has sat right over UK throughout the last week, bringing sunshine and almost summer-like temperatures for many.
Temperatures in the sunshine over London and Aberdeen rose to around 18C (64F) on Easter Sunday, while temperatures in Majorca struggled to reach 16C (61F) under cloud laden skies and light rain. Even those who had ventured to the Canary Isles would have been disappointed with Sunday's high of only 14C (57F) in Tenerife.
The contrast between the UK and Spain became greater when Spanish holidaymakers were also greeted by thunder and heavy downpours.
The Costa del Sol could have been more appropriately named the Costa Del Lluvia yesterday as slow moving thunderstorms filled the skies bringing 46mm (nearly 2 inches) of rain in just 12 hours. 38mm of rain usually falls during the whole month of April in this area.
With low pressure staying in charge of the weather over Spain for at least the next week, things look set to stay unsettled.
