Weather news around the globe. by Isobel Lang
Our Royal Wedding took place in Windsor under sunny skies, although I’m sure the brisk northwest wind didn’t go unnoticed, especially for those lining the route. The next couple of days will thankfully feel warmer again although cooler, more showery weather, typical of April, will take hold from midweek. Frost may well make a return too.
Our weather is quiet in comparison with that in the USA. Although you may have seen the golfers in Augusta basking in sunshine at last, across the Rockies an active frontal system is bringing heavy snow and strong winds. In fact, blizzard warnings are in force for Sunday. As this moves east across the central plains, it will interact with some humid air from the Gulf, producing some torrential downpours. Over the next couple of days, a nasty storm will also bring cold, windy and wintry weather to the Pacific Northwest.
On the other side of the world, another active front has been bringing heavy rain and a marked drop in temperature across China, and this is now heading through Korea and Japan. On Friday, Beijing recorded a month’s worth of rain in 12 hours, 17mm, from the front. Ahead of this, Wuhan in Hubei Province, saw its temperature rocket to 31C, 88F, with a drop of some 16 degrees as the front went through. The frontal cloud and rain is bringing a thoroughly wet Sunday to Korea and Japan but the weather will brighten to scattered showers by Monday.
Down Under, the continuing drought is proving frustrating for farmers in New South Wales. The latest figures show that March was the driest month in six months, and more than three-quarters of the state is now in drought. A band of rain will sweep across NSW over the next 24 hours, not enough to make any difference.
