Severe storms sweep across southern USA by Penny Tranter

Very stormy weather has been sweeping across southern parts of the USA in the past 24 hours, as warm air from the Gulf of Mexico met cold air from the Artic, giving lively conditions.

Severe thunderstorms ripped their way across Southern Oklahoma, bringing baseball sized hail, with surrounding states seeing torrential downpours of rain as an active weather front moved through.

As well as torrential rain and thunderstorms, some very strong and gusty winds of up to 78mph added to the problems.

Power lines were torn down by the strength of the wind, leaving thousands of homes across Tennessee, Mississippi and Missouri without electricity.

A tornado struck eastern parts of Arkansas, causing heavy damage to several homes and businesses. Several properties and trees we set on fire too, as sparks from lightning set them alight.

The weather is set to quieten down at the weekend, but more stormy weather is expected next week.
