Forget the Oscars - the Weather Centre have hit the gongs!

It's that time of year, there's a buzz in air and the feather dusters have been round the mantelpiece in anticipation - yes of course it's the TRIC awards...

The annual Television and Radio Industries Club Awards have now been running for thirty-five years and the list of winners grows ever longer and more distinguished - especially with our latest edition!

Tension has been running high in the office for weeks (but only possibly because the tea supply has been dangerously low). The nominations were announced in mid-February for 'Television Weather Presenter of the Year'. Three household names were vying for the title. Poised for the podium were, from our home camp, Michael Fish and Helen Willetts, and from ITV, Sian Lloyd.

And finally the day came, Tuesday the 9th of March. The Great Hall in the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane was the prestigious venue for the presentation ceremony, hosted by Charlie Dymock. The atmosphere was electric as Coronation Street's Wendi Peters and Andrew Whyment prised open the envelope and revealed the winner is...........

none other than our die hard forecaster Michael Fish!

Despite all the excitement, on his return to work this morning, Michael was very coy (and surprisingly sober). Unbelievably after over thirty years on the box this is Michael's first award for his services to TV weather (he claims to discount the 1987 award for Hurricane Forecasting). This is however, the second year in a row the bbc.co.uk - Weather Centre has enjoyed TRIC success as Carol Kirkwood picked up the award in 2003.

In an exclusive interview Michael claimed the highlight of his day was not in fact the statuesque trophy but a chance to canoodle with the opposition's Sian Lloyd! When asked for all the hot news from the red carpet he claims to have avoided the flash bulbs and crept in the back door. However, we are assured his charcoal pinstripe suit and weather chart tie were well received and would have given Sean Penn a run for his money.

And as for the fate of the award itself, well its to take pride of place in his own little boys room... yes a special shelf has been cleared in the study!
