Tropical storm Wutip hits the Philippines by Kirsty McCabe
Three people have died and over 10,000 people have been left homeless as torrential downpours from two successive storms caused floods and landslides across the Philippines. Tropical storm Pabuk was the first to hit the islands earlier in the week and was shortly followed by Wutip which churned across the country’s Northern provinces early on Wednesday morning.
In the Pampanga province, 80km from the country’s capital, Manila, around 60 towns have been submerged by rising flood waters which later triggered a small landslide.
Wutip is the fourth storm this year to hit the islands, which are regularly plagued by the effects of tropical storms. The heavy rains from both storms brought to an end a three month dry spell that has been plaguing the country; drying up dams and threatening the capitals water supply.
In one of the worst disasters over the past few years over 5000 people on the island of Leyte were killed through floods sparked by a typhoon. For now the worst appears to be over for inhabitants of the Philippines as Wutip has left the island and heads towards Taiwan.
