Over 1,000 homes destroyed in Bangladeshi storms by Sean Batty

Reports came in on Sunday that northern Bangladesh had been pummelled by severe tropical storms which injured around 45 people and destroyed thousands of homes in the area.

One of the thunderstorms spawned a tornado which ripped through five villages in the Tangail district late on Friday. In the neighbouring district of Jamalpur, 95 miles north of Dhaka, destructive hail hammered down throughout Friday and Saturday.

The storms knocked down trees and electricity poles, leaving many without electricity throughout the weekend.

Violent storms are not unusual at this time of year in Bangladesh. It was only a few weeks ago, at the end of March that I reported on storms over the delta nation which killed ten people and left many thousands homeless, although back then the storms were in the south of the country.
