Deadly cold plagues Ukraine by Jay Wynne

Cold weather continues to plague much of eastern Europe, with Ukraine being one of the worst hit countries.

In the capital, Kiev, last night temperatures plummeted to -17C (1F) and a very cold
-20C (-4F) at Luhansk Airport, which is in the east of the country close to the border with Russia, where the cold air is coming from.

This was just last night, but the cold weather has been anchored down on the country over the past few weeks inflicting devastating effects on the people.

Over 30 people have died in the past few days, with hundreds in hospitals suffering from hypothermia or frostbite. In total since mid-January the cold weather has claimed the lives of over 800 people and is continuing to rise each day as the cold weather continues its relentless grip on the country.

Some parts of the country will experience temperatures lower than -30C (-22F) tonight and it looks as though the cold northerly flow from Russia will continue to feed in icy air over the coming week. Temperatures over the next week are still forecast to be well below average, with Kiev not expected to reach any higher than
-10C (14F) at any point in the next five days. The average maximum temperature at this time of year for the city is -4C (25F).
