Whilst we in the UK have had a relatively mild spell, with temperatures above average for most of the country, it looks like the start of winter has set in to the Austrian Alps. Sonnblick has already had the rainfall equivalent to snow of 50mm in just 48 hours. The average November rainfall here is 117mm. The temperature at midday on Sunday was a cold
-11 Celsius. To put that into context, at this time of the year -10 Celsius is what we would expect to be the overnight minimum temperature!

In Winnipeg on Saturday night, the temperature fell to -1 Celsius. Normally at this time of the year that would be around -10 Celsius. So whilst this is not as cold as we would expect, if you were out you would certainly notice it! The reason for this was a legacy of air that came up from the US Plains. Tuesday daytime temperatures look like being above average also, with the mercury easily reaching 12 Celsius. But by Wednesday temperatures look like they are going to plummet back down to 1 Celsius as a blast of colder air moves across.

Other parts of the world have been seeing some significant rainfall. A slow moving weather system has been bringing unusually heavy rain to parts of Queensland, Australia. At Coolangatta on the coast and border with New South Wales, 256mm of rain fell in just 36 hours up to yesterday lunchtime (GMT). This is almost twice the monthly average of 119mm. Whilst it is not unusual to have heavy rain here, it is unusual to have so much in such a short amount of time.

Honolulu in Oahu has also just had a deluge of rain in a short space of time. In just 30 hours, 50mm fell – making up a good proportion of the average rainfall which amounts to 67mm.

And staying with rainfall, Wenchi in the west of Ghana in West Africa has also seen some torrential downpours. Thunderstorms deposited 42mm in just 24 hours – again well on the way to making up the average rainfall total for November which is 42mm
