Flooding hits parts of East Europe by Rob McElwee
At least seven people have lost their lives with many others missing as floods inundate parts of eastern Romania.
More than 1000 homes have been flooded with almost 1400 residents being evacuated after days of torrential rain. The worst floods hit four counties in the country which affected 47 villages and towns. The villages of Vrancea, Vaslui and Bacau were particularly badly hit with many roads and homes being washed away during the height of the flash flooding.
Meanwhile, in Austria, days of heavy rain has lead to the swelling of the Danube River. Authorities issued severe flood warnings across northern and western Austria on Friday after the Danube and other smaller rivers burst their banks. At least 120 buildings in the town of Ybbsitz were flooded as the Kleine Ybbs river reached its highest level in a century. Many streets in the town of Lilienfeld were flooded as the Traisen river burst its banks. Firemen and soldiers piled up sandbags along the embankment of the Traisen to protect other parts of the town.
With the worst of the rain over for now, forecasters expect some dry, settled weather for the coming week across Austria and Romania with just the risk of a few showers.
