Iran hit by worst snow storm in more than a decade by Susan Powell
The heaviest snowfall in more than a decade has blanketed parts of Iran over the last few days, killing more than 20 people, with many more still missing. The snow caused a number of avalanches, with the build up of ice on the roads causing numerous traffic accidents.
Government offices and schools have been forced to close as snow covered the city’s capital of Tehran for the second time in a week. A line of wintry showers passed through the region bringing almost 22 inches (550mm) of snow to some parts of northern and central Iran over the weekend. The snow blocked a number of major roads and lead to the cancellation of many flights.
The cold weather has caused numerous problems for residents in the western part of the country, with a number of towns still without gas due to a surge in demand. Authorities have urged residents to only travel when necessary, with more snow forecast for the next few days.
