Heavy snow hits the northeast states of the U.S. by Sean Batty
Many people tend to dream of a white Christmas, not a white Easter, but the latter looks likely across some parts of the northeast of the United States.
A spring storm has brought more than a foot of snow to some areas, closing schools, causing road accidents, leaving one dead, and leaving nearly 200,000 people without power.
New Hampshire saw 16 inches of snow fall in just a matter of hours on Thursday, while up to 24 inches fell in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Vermont and upstate New York also had several inches.
In Negaunee Township, which is near Marquette in Michigan saw 24 inches of snow fall in 24 hours during Wednesday. This nearly broke the record for the most snow to fall in a 24 hour period, which is 26.2 inches recorded back on March 14th, 1997.
Only a week into the new month, and already the National Weather Service (NWS) are saying that this is Negaunee’s second snowiest April on record.
The NWS stated that snow was not terribly unusual for April, but the quantity that many areas had seen was.
Although the storm system has moved out into the Atlantic, the forecast for the Easter weekend is for it to remain cold with snow flurries for many northeastern states.
