Tropical storm Paloma expected to strengthen by Philip Avery

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) are monitoring a tropical depression which formed in the western Caribbean on Thursday. The storm has been named as Tropical Storm Paloma, and is expected to strengthen into the seventh hurricane of this season. Currently lying in the North Atlantic, Paloma is tracking towards Cuba, and looks set to make landfall later this weekend.

A tropical storm watch has been issued across parts of the Bahamas for the next 48 hours, as the storm could bring several inches of rain here, and to parts of Nicaragua and Cuba. Subsequently forecasters at the NHC are keeping an eye on the Cayman Islands which also lie in the path of the storm. It is travelling in a north-westerly direction, packing winds of 40mph (64kph).

Paloma has developed towards the end of the Hurricane season, which runs from the beginning of June until late November.
