Bonfire night here in the UK was a chilly old night for some! The overnight temperature in Bournemouth dipped just below freezing, which is certainly cold enough for me, thank you! In some ways, a great roaring fire with dry skies for watching fireworks sounds perfect, but my word, it’s hard to stand out in it for long!
There will, I’m sure, be plenty more fireworks celebrations over this weekend. But weatherwise, it’s looking rather different to last night. It’s much milder out there already, courtesy of a warm front which has also brought in lots of cloud and a fair amount of rain, as well as that milder air.
In fact, overnight temperatures will probably stay into double figures for many, so it really will be very mild indeed, considering we’re now into November.
It’s been mild too in Greenland, where daytime temperatures should be just above freezing by day at the moment: +1 Celsius. But on Friday, the maximum for the day was a balmy 11 degrees in Narsarsuaq, so unseasonable indeed!
If it’s snow and ice you’re after though, then good news already for the US skiing season. Resorts in Colorado are opening early, thanks to a good covering from low level to mountain top. The weekend weather is looking sunny and clear, perfect for enjoying the first heady runs of the season.
Iceland has had a heavy fall of snow too. Jan Mayen, to the northeast, ended up with 60cm of snow in just 6 hours, which is about as much as they’d expect to get in a whole month. Hmmmm, I can picture a few snowball fights kicking off this weekend, can’t you?
Mind you, if you want somewhere REALLY wintry, then how about Alaska? Temperatures in Bettles had an overnight temperature of a biting minus 34 Celsius, which was probably a shock to the system even to the locals, as the average for November is a far more bearable(!) minus 22 degrees.
Brrrrr! Suddenly the mild, damp weekend that we can look forward to in the UK suddenly doesn’t look so bad! Fireworks party, anyone…?
