USA wildfires the most destructive and costly in 50 years. by Steph Ball

Whilst US firefighters can revel in their success this year in keeping the loss of homes down to a minimum, the government has said that the season is the most destructive and costliest in 50 years.

Wildfires raged across many states this season, and across Southern California in particular, one fire was stoked up by the arrival of the warm, dry Santa Ana winds and continued to burn for more than a month.

The United States government has put the cost of this years wildfires to 1.5 billion dollars which makes it the most destructive season in 50 years, and is the fourth time in the last 7 years that costs have risen over a billion dollars.

It is also estimated to be the most destructive season with up to 9.1 million acres destroyed in comparison to the previous record of 8.7 million in 2005. The greatest losses are reported to be in the states of Montana and New Mexico.
