Tropical storm Florence is expected to become a hurricane by the weekend. by Kaye Forster
Tropical storm Florence has strengthened in the mid-Atlantic and is expected to strengthen further over the next few days, becoming a hurricane by Friday evening.
The storm was born on Sunday as a tropical depression, with wind speeds less than 39mph, although forecasters stated that the storm was poorly organised. However, it soon gained strength in the warm tropical waters and now has wind speeds of 45mph.
As the sixth tropical storm of the season, it was given the name Florence. Now, forecasters believe that the storm could reach hurricane status (wind speeds above 74mph) over the next few days, which would make it the second hurricane this season.
Currently around 850 miles east of the Leeward Islands, Florence is moving west-northwest at around 13 mph. She is not expected to affect any land areas over the next few days but her general path is towards the United States.
Florence follows on the heels of Tropical Storm Ernesto, which briefly became the season’s first hurricane last week, before weakening again and hitting Florida and North Carolina as a tropical storm.
