Edouard becomes fifth tropical storm this season by Darren Bett

Edouard became the fifth tropical storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season on Monday, churning west through the Gulf of Mexico. A warning has been issued by the National Hurricane Centre for the coast of western Louisiana and eastern Texas. The storm is packing winds of 50mph (80kph) and is forecast to strengthen before making landfall in Texas on Tuesday.

Heavy rain and strong surf are expected along the coast of Louisiana over the next 24 hours, with the warm waters of the Gulf providing the ideal conditions needed for the storm to intensify. Tropical storms are low pressure systems harbouring sinking air at the centre of its circulation.

The sixth month hurricane season runs from June until November, and has so far already seen two of its four storms strengthen into hurricanes. Residents down along the coast are still cleaning up from the remnants of Hurricane Dolly, which hit the region last month.
