More headaches for the Philippines by Penny Tranter
A few weeks ago the Philippines were hit by devastatingly heavy rains and flooding, which led to landslides, killing many across the islands.
More rain has swept in as a tropical storm develops and gathers strength out over the Caroline Islands, just 500 miles east of the Philippine island of Mindanao. Bands of heavy rain from the storm brought 106mm (4.2 inches) of rain in just six hours to Legaspi, where the average for the whole month stands at 195mm (7.7 inches). The heavy rains brought about by the storm again bring the threat of severe flooding and the risk of further landslides.
It looks as though the rain will get worse over the coming days as the tropical storm continues to strengthen and move towards the islands.
Currently Tropical Storm 01W has winds of 40mph with gust of up to 52mph. By Tuesday 8th March the centre of the storm is forecast to arrive on the coast of Mindanao, by which time winds will be sustained at around 75mph gusting up to 95mph. This could bring some structural damage as well as a storm surge for eastern coastal part of the island, where flooding may become a big issue.
Keep an eye on Tropical Storm 01W…
