Floods hit central Vietnam by Denise Kane
Severe flooding over the past few days has left thousands of people homeless and at least 25 dead in Vietnam.
The central provinces of the country have seen days of torrential rain and thunderstorms. Some of the worst affected areas with the heaviest loss of life occurred in Quang Nam and Thua Thien Hue province. Flooding destroyed many roads and houses, causing several landslides in Quang Ngai and the central highlands of Kon Tum. Intense lightning cut off power to many villages, with some homes suffering damage from direct strikes.
The floods have destroyed more than 15,000 homes, and thousands of hectares of rice fields, and other crops.
Between September and January much of the coast and central highlands of Vietnam receive heavy rain from tropical storms and typhoons, which develop in the western Pacific around that time.
So far this year, floods and storms in the country have killed more than 200 people, with the majority losing their lives from floods triggered by Typhoon Lekima in early October.
