Felix intensifies to Category 5 hurricane by Steph Ball
After it appeared that the 2007 Atlantic Hurricane season might never get underway, the last few weeks has suddenly seen a surge in activity.
It is little more than over two weeks since Hurricane Dean steamed across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, with Hurricane Felix now running hot on its tail.
Felix developed in the Caribbean on Friday and rapidly intensified over the weekend to a potentially catastrophic Category 5 hurricane. Early Monday morning winds were reported to be over 165mph (270km/h) with even higher gusts, with the hurricane heading westwards across the Central Caribbean.
On Sunday Felix lashed at Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire with heavy rain and strong winds and is now on course to brush just north of the coast of Honduras, making landfall across Belize late Wednesday.
Felix is expected to remain strong over the next few days, as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane. A hurricane watch has been issued from Limon Honduras to the Honduras/ Nicaragua border.
Further updates may appear here over the next few days as the hurricane steers towards Belize.
