Heatwave continues in Arizona by Steph Ball
Many parts of Arizona, USA are experiencing a heatwave that is likely to intensify in time for the Independence Day celebrations on the 4th of July.
Thousands of people expected to travel out to the Valley area of Phoenix to see the fireworks celebrations have been warned to take extreme measures against heat stress and heat stroke. Temperatures in Phoenix have reached the mid 40’s Celsius (around 113F), and could rise further before the heatwave breaks. Temperatures at this time of year would normally be near the 40C (104F) mark.
The heatwave has developed due to a strong high pressure ridge extending from Colorado southwest across Arizona and southern California. It is expected to intensify and send temperatures soaring further.
The highest temperature ever recorded on the 4th July in Phoenix was 48C (118F) in 1989. It is thought that Phoenix residents might experience the hottest summer on record this year, possibly exceeding Valley’s all time high of 50C (122F) which was set on 26th June 1990.
