Wildfires rage across southwestern USA by Liam Dutton

Hot and dry conditions across south western parts of the USA have resulted in widespread wildfires over the past fortnight.

Northern Nevada has seen some of the biggest wildfires of the year so far, with 79,000 acres of land being affected near the town of Elko.

The raging flames and drifting smoke led to 20 miles of motorway being closed, with long delays for travellers.

Weather conditions have certainly not helped the situation, with winds of up to 40mph fanning the flames. Despite unfavourable weather conditions, after five days of continuously battling the flames, fire fighters finally have the wildfires under control.

The National Interagency Fire Center has said that wildfires have consumed 3.5 million acres of land so far this year, more than double the annual average for this stage in the wildfires season.

Heavy showers are forecast across south western states in the coming few days, which should help to dampen the flames further.
